Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated his intention to expand the fight against drug trafficking beyond maritime routes and move toward active operations on Mexican territory. According to him, American agencies have already managed to block about 97% of drug shipments coming by sea, but the main threat still comes from the land-based infrastructure of criminal groups.
Trump emphasized that drug cartels effectively control a significant part of Mexico, exerting influence over the country’s economy, politics, and security. He expressed regret over the current state of affairs, noting that what is happening to Mexico causes him deep concern.
The statement caused a wide public reaction, as possible U.S. ground actions against the cartels could lead to a serious escalation in relations between Washington and Mexico City, as well as affect the security situation throughout the North American region.
